On Tuesday, April 19th, 2022, Daniel Spicer of Capitol Heights MD peacefully passed away following a short illness. Dan, as he was affectionately known, was the loving husband of the late Jerolyn Spicer, his beloved wife whom he was married to for 56 years, before her passing in 2016.
A North Carolina native, Daniel was a veteran of the US Air Force and after honorably leaving military service, he relocated to Washington, D.C. to marry Jerolyn and raise his family. It was at this time he started his government career with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) before moving on to a 30-plus year career D.C. Department of Corrections, working and raising his family as he put himself and his wife through college. He earned a Bachelor of Science at D.C. Teachers College in 1971.
Dan’s interests and involvements were as dynamic as his personality. An avid fan of aviation, he was an accomplished private aircraft pilot, and would take trips down to North Carolina in his own plane to visit family. He was was proud of his accomplishments achieving both commercial and instructor ratings and it was these ratings and passion for aviation that extended to his involvement with the Civil Air Patrol where he was a Captain, and President of Negro Airmen International (NAI), a non-profit dedicated to exposing, educating, and mentoring minority youth in aviation. He took great pride in teaching ground school at Tuskegee’s annual Summer Flight Academy in Alabama. It is through that association where he befriended several famous Tuskegee Airmen. Many of today’s minorities in aviation careers owe that to his passion and influence. His other interests also included wood working, photography, and travel.
Dan was extremely loved and respected by all that knew him, from his neighbors to his Church family at Gethsemane United Methodist Church, where he was a member for over 15 years.
He is survived by his sons Marc and Miles, daughters-in-law, Jeanette and Jennifer and grandchildren Ryan, Matthew and Nicholas, sisters Sarah and Selma, sister-in-law Jeanette, nieces, nephews, cousins and a wealth of family and friends.
