was born on September 27, 1947, in Como, North Carolina, to the late Johnnie Barnes and Mildred Barnes. She was lovingly raised, nurtured, and cared for by her grandmother, Sudie Barnes, who played a central role in her upbringing and the foundation of her values. Sudie Barnes’ guidance, discipline, and unconditional love helped shape the woman Elsie became. Elsie was known for her amazing cooking, her warm and welcoming spirit, and her ability to make everyone feel at home. She lived a life rooted in compassion, humility, and service, always placing the needs of others before her own. She earned her GED from Roanoke Technical College. Answering a calling to care for others, she became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CAN) and served faithfully in healthcare. She was employed with The Virginia Pilot, earning the respect of her colleagues and the gratitude of those she served. At an early age, Elsie accepted Christ as her Savior. She was a devoted church member who served faithfully on the Usher Board and was a member of the Eastern Star. Her faith guided her daily walk and was evident in her kindness, prayerful spirit, and dedication to God’s work.
