Ernest Orlando Ifill, affectionally known as Landa or Lando, was born on August 25, 1940, in Chapel Land, Saint Philip, Barbados, the fourth of six children born to Simeon Beresford Ifill and Mary Elizabeth Ifill (Nee Parris). On Thursday, January 16, 2025, he peacefully transitioned at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C. after a brief illness. He lived In Mitchellville, MD, at the time of his death. Orlando received his primary education at Saint David’s Boys School and His secondary education at Boys’ Foundation. Upon completion of his secondary education, he joined the Royal Barbados Police Force in January 1960 until he left in May 1965 to immigrate England to study Nursing. He received his Registered Mental Health Certification from St. Augustine School of Nursing, Canterbury, Kent, England in 1968, and his General Diploma from Canterbury District School of Nursing, Canterbury, Kent England, in 1968. He obtained his Registered Nurse License in 1974 in New York City. He obtained a Bachelor of Nursing from Bowie State University and attended graduate school at Howard University. While in England he met and married his first wife, the late Gemma Bouccaud. From this union, two daughters were born, Jacqueline and Joanne Ifill, both of whom were born in England. This marriage ended in divorce. He immigrated to the United States in 1974, and this is where he met his wife Gregg Nurse Ifill, at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center (BHMC), Brooklyn, New York City. He worked at BHMC from 1974 to November 1976 when he relocated to Prince Georges County, Maryland. He briefly worked at Washington Hospital from November 1976 to April i977. He worked at Howard University Hospital from April 1977 until his retirement in June 2006. During his entire nursing career, he held many different supervisory and administrative positions.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Gregg Ifill; four children: Joanne Ifill; Shawn Ifill; Adrian Ifill and Nicole Ifill Abdullah. Brother, Keith Ifill (FL). Nine grandchildren: Jasmine Ifill; Konata and Asha Ward; Malik, Amirah and Laila Abdullah; Brooke, Skylar and Autumn Ifill. Great- Grandson, Jeremiah Ifill-Shellington. Daughter-in- law, Shavonne Ifill. Nephews, Trevor Ifill, (Barbados), Wayne Ifill (Barbados), Michael Ifill, (NY), and Mark Ifill (NY); Nieces, Marcia Farley (Barbados), Carol-Ann Ifill ( Barbados), Michele Ifill (NY), Susanne Bailey (NY), Sharon Ifill (CT), and Samantha Ifill (FL); A host of Great-nieces and Great-nephews. Sisters-in- law, Patricia Philip (NY). Andria Ifill (Barbados) and Thelma Ifill, (Barbados), Ionie Ifill (FL); and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jacqueline Ward (MD); brother, Victor (NY); brother, Grantley (England); brother, Henderson Ifill (Barbados); and sister, Ismay Ifill (Barbados).
