Thanks again to all of you for your support for Gary and your kind prayers, thoughts and words!

Gary Vincent Johnson was born in Washington DC on Leap Day in 1956, the youngest of five siblings. His childhood home was full of extended family which made is really unique and special. The house was full of siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles... all joined together at the time to make the best of life in DC. After graduating from high school, he was off to Houston where he spent many happy years living with his brother’s family, before moving to San Diego, and then Chicago, finally returning to his beloved DC to care for his aging mother and aunt.

Gary was funny. His sense of humor was incredibly dry and on point, with a clever perspective and an outlook especially peculiar to black folks growing up in DC. Gary was an ARTIST – first and always; working in different mediums, always trying to be better. His paintings and sketches were his children, his prized possessions. He was reluctant to part with any of them; no matter how much you begged.

Gary was a lover of music, especially classical jazz, but was by no means limited to a specific genre. His album collection is formidable, and his knowledge even more so, He didn’t just like to listen to the music, he studied and read and followed the history and development of musicians he loved.  Gary made friends easily and kept them for a lifetime. For all of this – all of who he was and how he was, everything that was uniquely Gary - he will be truly missed.

He is preceded in death by many family members, including his parents, Burnice and Henry Johnson, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and three of his four siblings, Claudia (John), Wayne, and Jeffrey (Laura). He is survived by his sister, Karen, cousins Mark and Michael, many nieces and nephews, and many, many friends.
