A Life Well-Lived
Our beloved Deacon Henry Edward Cubbage Sr. transitioned peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior on July 23, 2025, at the graceful age of 89. A man of deep faith, quiet strength, and unwavering dedication, he leaves behind a legacy rooted in love, family, and service.
Henry is survived by his devoted wife of 71 years, Fannie Mae Cubbage, and their six children: Henry Jr., Felicia, Jeffrey, Adriane, and Kevin—lovingly known as June, Faye, Jeff, Adie, and Tony. He is preceded in death by their daughter Clementeen (“Clema”), who passed away two years ago. He now joins her in everlasting peace. He also leaves to cherish his memory one sister, Etha Mae; one daughter-in-law, Paula; a host of nieces and nephews; and generations of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, along with countless relatives and friends. Born in Manning, South Carolina in 1935 to Leola Oliver and James Cubbage, Henry was one of 14 siblings—all of whom preceded him in death. He accepted Christ at an early age at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, where the foundation for his lifelong faith was laid.
Henry’s life was a reflection of his deep Christian values. He loved God above all else and often lifted his voice in hymns that brought comfort to those around him. Sundays were sacred—reserved for worship and family dinners filled with laughter, stories, and memories. Whether humming a gospel tune, offering a word of encouragement, or leading grace at the table, Henry’s presence radiated peace and devotion. In his younger years, Henry sang in a local gospel group in Manning. Whether it was his charm, his good looks, or his magnetic voice, he soon caught the eye of Fannie, the love of his life. Together, they built a legacy grounded in faith and love. After raising their family, they joined Rhema Christian Center Church in 1985, where Henry flourished—graduating from Catechism and later serving faithfully as a Deacon. A devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, loyal friend, and “man’s man,” Henry was a true jack of all trades. During their time in Silver Spring, Maryland, he was the go-to person for car repairs, home projects, and handyman work. He especially loved fishing—rising early on Saturdays to take his boat out and returning with coolers full of carp, perch, and rockfish—plenty to feed not just the family, but any friends who happened to drop by.
From 1967 to 1995, Henry worked as a boiler room mechanic for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), affectionately known as “Metro.” Fannie also worked at Metro as a Transit Operations Supervisor until her retirement in 1997. Before Metro, Henry held jobs in construction and in restaurants throughout Washington, DC. In 2001, Henry and Fannie returned to their roots in Manning, SC, and joined Antioch Baptist Church, where he continued his service as a Deacon.
Henry’s life was a testament to the enduring power of faith, family, and hard work. Though he will be deeply missed, his spirit lives on in all who knew and loved him. While his journey on earth may be complete, his reward in heaven is eternal…
“Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
