Lorraine Priscilla Mitchell (nee Mayfield) was born August 30, 1931, in Washington, DC. After graduating from Cardoza High School in 1949, she attended nursing school and worked at various companies before starting a long-term career with the District of Columbia (DC) General Hospital as Secretary to the Director of Nursing. She was proud of her contributions to DC General Hospital and would often relay stories about her exemplary performance and especially noting the level of respect she received “from the higher ups”. She later met Bennie Claude Mitchell whom she married in 1954 and from this union six children were born. In the mid-70’s, she became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. In her post retirement years, she enjoyed helping her children and taking care of her grandchildren, sharing her love of Jehovah and the Paradise to come and spending time with family - “having a good time”. Her favorite antidotes were “be grateful and kind” and “laughter is the best medicine”. We celebrate her life with gratitude for being chosen to share this journey of life with her and for all the humorous stories and loving memories she leaves us. These memories will help heal the sorrow in our hearts now that she is no longer physically with us.
Lorraine was the beloved wife of the late Bennie Claude Mitchell, the loving mother of Benjaman K. Mitchell, Eldon C. Mitchell, Althea L. Heard, Robin T. Mitchell Thompson, Kumiah N. Mitchell Harrison and the late Wendell C. Mitchell. She was the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren, Benjaman K. Mitchell II, Dekra J. Mitchell, Eldon C. Mitchell Jr., Precious N. Mitchell, Micah C. Mitchell, Nicole L. Heard, Ashley D. Heard, Gabrielle J. Harrison and the late Dante M. Mitchell; and nine great- grandchildren. Lorraine was the last surviving sibling of thirteen children born to Jefferson and Hattie (nee Arnold) Mayfield. She leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews and extended family who she nurtured and loved like her own. She was a proud and longtime member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses and leaves behind many longtime friends, most of whom she considered family.
