Merritt was preceded in death by his parents, Harold R. Johnson and Irma E. Johnson-McGalliaria; his brother, Harold Johnson; his stepfather, Peter T. McGalliaria; and many beloved aunts and uncles, including Carol J. Hayes, Hope Warren, Geraldine Johnson, Phyllis Graves, Lois Stockton, Katherine Harewood, Georgette “Betty” Johnson, Bertha Johnson, and uncles Richard, Edward, Louie, Charles, Leroy, Winslow, and Robert Johnson.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Adele Sadler Johnson; his son, Merritt L. Johnson II; his daughter, Stephanie Johnson Moore; his son-in-law, Virgil Moore III; his granddaughters, Madison, Morgan, and Zarina Moore; his stepbrother, Peter McGalliaria; and a host of other relatives and friends.
