Minnie Hughes Obituary

Minnie Lee Hughes was born on August 30, 1945 in Washington, D.C. She was one of eight children that her parents, Leona (Hopkins) Gibson and John Gibson raised in the heart of the city. As the second oldest of the siblings, Minnie would help her parents by watching over her  younger brothers and sisters alongside her other elder siblings. From her youth, Minnie’s attributes of being a strong, hard-working, no-nonsense, independent go-getter were displayed. These qualities would become hallmarks of her work ethic.

As a high school graduate from the District of Columbia Public School system, she went on to work in the healthcare industry’s dietary field for over 40 years – first at Rogerson Memorial Hospital (later called Capitol Hill Hospital and now called Bridgepoint Hospital) and then at Sibley Memorial Hospital. Over the years, she studied at the University of the District of Columbia, earning certification(s) in her field of healthcare dietary supervision. It was at Sibley where her skills, education, dedication, diligence and commitment to excellence propelled her into management and she served for many years until her retirement.

Minnie was a loving, God-fearing daughter, mother and friend. She joined The Sanctuary at Kingdom Square church (Bishop Anthony Maclin) where her elder sister and family worshipped. Before long, she was energetically serving on the Hospitality Ministry utilizing the tools the LORD had given her. She was thorough in her service and gave it her all, while enjoying the satisfaction of jobs well-done as unto the LORD.

Hard work and independence were her mantra. She strongly believed in taking life by the reigns and striving, with God's help, to achieve her goals. To note, one of her hobbies was writing poetry, as she said it was a way to express herself – and that, she did well. Minnie valued family and friend relationships; and was willing to listen to others and offer sound advice when needed. She never flinched when called upon for assistance. Such a wonderful gift from God to us, she was; and she will be truly missed! Minnie transitioned from this life on January 25, 2023.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Moore, and is survived by her two sons, Ernest Hopkins and John Hughes, III; two sisters, Gloria Milner (Garfield) and Linda Gibson; one brother, Michael Gibson, Sr.; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.
