Robert Holbrook Obituary

Robert Tyrone Holbrook’s entrance into life began on September 3, 1940, in Washington, D.C. to the late Robert A. and Bernice V. Holbrook. He departed this earthly life on January 7, 2022.  Robert was educated in the public schools of the District of Columbia. He graduated from Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School. He served in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge. Robert attended Bowie State College (now Bowie State University) where he majored in Anthropology with a minor in Psychology. He graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree. As a Graduate student at Bowie, he majored in Psychology with a minor in Social Work, graduated with Honors, receiving a master’s degree in Psychology. He was a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated.

In 1964, Robert married Shirley Boyd. Of this union were born 2 sons, Michael and Mark.  Robert retired from the District of Columbia’s Department of Corrections as the Deputy Warden.  His love for helping people become their better selves led him to obtain a license as a Social Worker and starting his own private social work consultancy business. He served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at Northern Virginia Community College.

Robert was affiliated with several organizations, including volunteering for many years as the Director of the Northern Virginia Big Brothers Organization and board member of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington. He was one of the first counselors hired at Circles of Hope in 1996.  He was dedicated to his clients and took his work very seriously.  The success that Circles of Hope has had over the years is directly attributed to Robert’s commitment, dedication and professionalism.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Bernice; sister, Consuella Murphy and brother Vincent Holbrook. He is survived by his wife Shirley; sons Michael and Mark (Kendall), 3 grandchildren, Roya, Gabriel and Brason; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
