Shirley Ann (Newby) Townes

Shirley Ann Townes, born on September 2, 1945, in Virgilina, VA, peacefully passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. She was the beloved daughter of Frances Royster and Thomas Newby. She was raised by her grandmother, Cora Bell Royster, in Clarksville, VA.  Shirley graduated from West End High School in 1964.  Shortly after, she married and moved to Washington, DC, to be with her extended family. While in DC, she attended the Washington School of Secretaries in Northwest. Eventually, Shirley settled in Landover, MD, where she lived for over 30 years with her significant other, Mr. Louis Jackson, who was her devoted companion for 34 years. Miss Shirley was love by everyone in her community, she was known to keep an eye out on the children in her neighborhood.  Shirley found her true calling working as a Security Protective Officer (SPO) with Wackenhut and the General Services Administration (GSA), where she served with dedication until her retirement in 1994. Beyond her professional life, Shirley was known for her boundless love for her grandchildren, her passion for music, her green thumb, and her affection for her beloved dog.  Shirley leaves behind her special friend, Louis Jackson, and seven children: Felicia Townes, Willie Townes Jr., Monte Milling, Michelle Milling (deceased), Milton Milling Jr, Louis C. Jackson, and Michael Jackson. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and a host of family and friends who will forever cherish her memory.  Shirley Ann Townes will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her warmth, love, and spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
